The department offers A’ Level in Design Technology, Product Design. The A’ Level allows a Graphics approach to the project work or a Resistant Materials approach, thus allowing students to continue with designing and making in the discipline in which they worked at GCSE if they wish.
Projects at A’ Level are totally self selected and with guidance are channelled so that they will gain maximum marks for the course work. The two hour exam at AS and A2 include essay style answers and test out the student’s knowledge of product analysis and Industrial manufacture. Course work makes up 50% of the A’ Level each year and the exam, the other 50% each year. All units then become 25% of the final A’ Level.
As designing skills are developed to a high standard, this A’ Level would suit students who wish to go into Architecture, Engineering and other Design courses. The manufacturing side of the A’ Level also is extremely useful for courses which require dexterity and practical ability, e.g. Medicine and Dentistry.
