Students from Upton Court won the regional heat of the Mock Trial competition at Reading Magistrates Court on Saturday 11th March.
Students at the school had been preparing their case and were ready to compete against seven other schools. In readiness for this competition they had to learn about the rule of law, the role of the Magistrate Court and also the legal implications for the case. Students were divided into two team, in round one the team defended the case and, in round two, they prosecuted.
The case, prepared by the Citizenship Foundation, was of a young person accused of entering a friend's home and taking a play station. Students demonstrated a good understanding of what constitutes burglary and of court proceeding as they took on different roles in order to support the team.
ITV news joined for the day and run a story that evening. If you missed the item, please follow the link to hear our students and Miss Balani speak about this experience.
