KS5 – Geography

Geography is a popular option at A Level with an increasing number of students deciding to develop their passion for the subject by reading Geography at University. Recent Geographical alumni have continued their studies at The University of Oxford and Russell Group Universities including The University of Bristol, Exeter, Durham and University College London (UCL).

We follow the AQA A Level specification which builds upon and extends GCSE knowledge. It offers an equal balance between Human and Physical Geography as well as covering key Geographical fieldwork skills. Year 12 students study Changing Places where they explore and evaluate the changing character of Geographical spaces. In Water and Carbon cycle students adopt a scientific approach to exploring the interactions between global systems at a range of scales. In the summer term students are supported in the planning and completion of their NEA (Non Examined Assessment) where they investigate an issue of personal interest and produce an academic write up. In the summer term and into Year 13, students investigate the issues and opportunities found in contemporary urban environments along with Global Governance which explores globalisation, international trade and development. The final topics include investigating the increasing challenges of Natural Hazards and Cold Environments, both past and present.

All A Level Geographers are given the opportunity to develop their Geographical skills and understanding on a residential field visit to Drapers Field Study Centre near Betws-y-coed in Snowdonia National Park, North Wales where students investigate this stunning post-glacial landscape along with its natural and human systems.
