ECT’s
Once teachers are fully qualified (via PGCE or GTP programmes) they are supported through an early careers programme of support and development where successful candidates are awarded QTS The Early Career Teacher (ECT) Programme is a two-year training and support entitlement for early career teachers and their in-school mentors funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and based on the Early Career Framework (ECF). The ECF was developed in response to the DfE Recruitment and Retention strategy which recognised that teachers deserve high-quality support throughout their careers, particularly in those first years after Initial Teacher Training (ITT) when the learning curve is steepest. At UCGS Early careers teacher are supported by an in school mentor to complete a programme of developmental CPDL facilitate by the Teaching School Hub Berkshire with University College London as our awarding body.
CPDL
At Upton Court Grammar School and across Pioneer Educational Trust, CPDL is at the heart of our school improvement model. By designing and delivering on an inclusive and bespoke model for continuous professional development, we are able to enable our colleagues and schools to keep pace in an ever-changing educational landscape and enable growth, not just for the individual, but for the wider team and the school. We provide the conditions of high trust alongside accountability, promoting agency for colleagues and choice regarding their personal development, choices, progression, and learning. Our wish to provide high-quality growth opportunities for all colleagues. The professional development model is for all colleagues across our family of schools with equal access to personal development opportunities underpinned by the principles of vertical leadership development, and a coaching way of being. The coaching way of being catapult to the individual to the forefront of the process, leading them to identify their wants and desires to grow, providing a safe in this environment to explore and trial new learning.
Our model allows for inclusivity by giving time and agency to individual schools and teams to decide on their focus for departmental meetings and school-based training to deliver on the differing needs of staff, student bodies and school priorities. All colleagues, teaching staff educational support staff such as TAs and technicians, non-educational support staff and our pupil welfare staff have bespoke opportunities relevant to their roles throughout the cycle to provide meaningful opportunities and time for collaboration and growth of knowledge and skill. All programmes and all staff are exposed to cross trust collaboration within our weekly cycles to create networks and relationships, giving time for best practice sharing and using our differing lives experiences to impact on practice and outcomes for our students.
Leadership programmes
As our staff become more experienced and seek promotion, we support them by running in house leadership programmes, such as our ‘Pioneering Leadership’ programme, ‘Working Title’ programme and ‘Pioneer Leadership Framework’ programme. The aim of these programmes is to create a shared language and mindset of leadership and personal agency which also relates and is reinforced by our appraisal and CPDL offer. We are able to spot and develop individuals who might not traditionally see themselves as a leader and create a sense of collaboration, collectively and across our family of schools. Leaders are challenged throughout their work to seek heat, give themselves opportunities to see colliding perspectives and take part in elevated sensemaking.
We take advantage of national programmes, such as The National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML), National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) and National Professional Qualification (NPQ): Headship programmes for professionals on their leadership journeys and will endeavour to support their applications and development as much as possible.
